How Heroin Addiction Develops

Heroin is rapidly converted to morphine and can reach the brain quickly. Opioids activate mu-opioid receptors, reducing pain and producing relaxation or euphoria while slowing breathing. Repeated use can lead to tolerance, craving, physical dependence, and opioid use disorder. After abstinence, tolerance falls; returning to a previous amount can cause a fatal overdose.

Overdose and Other Dangers

Warning signs include very slow or absent breathing, pinpoint pupils, blue or gray lips, gurgling, and inability to wake. Illicit fentanyl may be present in heroin, counterfeit pills, cocaine, or methamphetamine. Combining opioids with alcohol, benzodiazepines, or other sedatives greatly increases risk.

Withdrawal and Emergency Response

Withdrawal can cause muscle aches, vomiting, diarrhea, anxiety, sweating, insomnia, and intense craving. For suspected overdose, call 911, give naloxone when available, provide rescue breathing if trained, and stay with the person.

What Treatment Can Include

Evidence-based care can include buprenorphine, methadone, or extended-release naltrexone; counseling; naloxone; medical care; and treatment for co-occurring conditions.
